Throughout Manchester United’s history they have had a tradition of having a mix of veterans and youth, since Matt Busby rebuilt the club in the mid-1900s he made it adamant that the youth setup of the club was crucial in the English club’s identity and DNA. Ever since Busby’s time at the club this has been the key to United’s history. In the present day of ever-evolved modern football, United have not strayed away from their tradition and have continued to have youngsters come through the academy ranks and eventually into the first team. Manchester United’s youth academy, Carrington has produced many top players for Manchester United despite the club being in a rough patch for the last 12 years. Manchester United have had 250 academy graduates make their debuts for the Manchester United first team, with legendary players making their debuts for the grand Mancunian club; The Busby Babes, George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law who highlighted the early tradition of bringing up youth players. Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, and Phill Neville who headlined the class of 92, who led the club to an unprecedented treble in 1999. Manchester United in the 90s and 2000s were a force to be reckoned under the tutelage of the grand Sir Alex Ferguson who led the club, since his appointment in 1986 and retirement in 2013 the club won 13 premier league titles, 5 FA Cups. 4 league cups 2 Champions Leagues titles. Since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United has been in a very bad stretch of years not winning a premier league in 11 years but despite the clubs failings one thing has remained true, the importance of youth integration into the football club.
The integration of academy players will always of utmost importance at Manchester United, the integration of youth players into the first team, and despite the club’s failings on the pitch youth players coming through Carrington, the club’s academy will always remain at the forefront of the club. Manchester United has had much misfortune since Ferguson’s retirement, but during that time there have still been academy graduates such as Marcus Rashford, Jessie Lingard, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson, and yesterday Ethan Wheatley who became the clubs 250th academy graduate just after scoring two goals in the U-18 PL to give the U-18s the PL cup. These young players who come through the academy add to a long list of players to graduate through Carrington, representing the club’s identity since Tom Manley became the first Academy player to play for Manchester United in 1931. Manchester United’s importance of youth players will always be at the heart of the club through transfer signings, but especially through the academy.
Last season in 2023 Marcus Rashford, a Carrington graduate scored 30 goals in all competitions for the Manchester club as United won the Carabao Cup and were in the FA Cup final while placing 3rd in the premier league under Erik ten Hag, the new manager. The England international became the first Manchester United player to score 30 goals in a single campaign, since Robin Van Persie did so in Sir Alex Ferguson’s farewell campaign in the 2012-13 season. Rashford’s joy and play had been rejuvenated in the 22-23 season after a very poor 21-22 season and with the uncertainty of his contract Rashford had to prove to the Old Trafford faithful that he was the right man to wear the number ten and lead Manchester United. Rashford proved that much and more…Rashford secured himself a 5 year contract extension, stating that he still had the drive to succeed and bring the highest honors to the club, "I've already had some amazing experiences at this incredible club, but there is still a lot more to achieve and I remain relentlessly determined to win more trophies in the years ahead.”
It was as if United had revolutionized and were well on their way back to the top, United had beaten every Big 6 club at Old Trafford, defeated Barcelona at Old Trafford in the Europa league, won the, and appeared in a FA Cup final. Thing were on the up for United with Carrington graduate Marcus Rashford at the forefront along with international United players Bruno Fernandes being the stars of the team with new incoming singing such as Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen improving team while young academy products such as Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho making their way into the first team. The 22-23 season looked as it were going to be the huge turning of the tide for the great Manchester Club, but it was far from it, while the previous season was great…however, there were flaws a 7-0 loss away at Anfield against Liverpool, no wins against the top 9 in the premier league away from home, dry spots in the season, and the biggest one of them all…a loss against Manchester City in the FA Cup Final as Manchester City went an won a treble just as United did in ’99. The 22-23 season set the foundations for a new project at Manchester United, what was viewed as a turning point and on the right track to returning to the top of English football, Manchester United’s path back to the top had been derailed in what felt like seconds. The 23-24 had high expectations for Manchester United but the team has been one of the worst performing teams in the premier league with their on-pitch performance, despite only being in 6th position the team has underperformed.
It feels that Manchester United’s progression had been derailed in this very underperforming season for the Manchester club. However during these dark times the academy integration has been at the forefront, there has been positives in what feels like a season where they would be far and beyond…this is not so. During this season Manchester United has integrated the youth very well this season with youth products from the academy showing why they deserve to play for a club of the size of Manchester United. Players like Marcus Rashford and Johnny Evans, who were integrated to the first team years ago who still play a big part in the club’s progress as they pave the way for the new young talented academy players who come from Carrington. While Alejandro Garnacho announced himself to the footballing world last season, this season he has seen more time on the pitch and more time to show what he is capable of, the same goes for Kobbie Mainoo, Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson. As well as Shea Lacey, Harry Amass and the Fletcher twins who have yet to see their first team debut for the club. Kobbie Mainoo and Willy Kambwala were given their fare share of game time this season in an injury plagued season for the squad, Kobbie has shown he is mature beyond his years and Kambwala has shown his quality as center back. Recently, Ethan Joseph Wheatley made his first team debut, marking the clubs 250th academy graduate, being among names such as Paul Pogba, Jessie Lingard, Johnny Evans, Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck, etc.
In the dark times at Manchester United the club can always look towards the academy. Carrington will always be a hot bed for talented players, just as Matt Busby thought so many years ago when he implemented it into the clubs DNA, despite the clubs dark season in 2023-2024 the academy has been the source for the positives in the season for Manchester United and as Manchester United look to progress after a underwhelming season, the DNA of the club will be the main part of the clubs progression into returning the glories that were achieved under Sir Alex Ferguson, the greatest British manager that football has ever seen.
